The Home
Understanding how your home was built is an important first step in planning an insulation project.
Housing is infinitely varied and there’s no one size fits all solution for retrofit projects. An 1880 house is likely to be very different to a 1980 one. You’ll need to do a bit of detective work to work out which parts of your home might already be insulated, and to plan the most effective upgrades.
This section covers the different parts of a typical British home. Your walls can be responsible for 35% of heat loss if uninsulated. The roof is the next most important part, followed by the ground floor, doors and windows.
The remaining pages in this section cover some key themes which are equally as important, including ventilation and airtightness, heating, checking whether you already have insulation, and some key differences between older and more modern building.
